I’ve just made and uploaded a PDF of the complete CARET documents, which hit the internet with some force back in 2007. You can read the story about their supposed provenance here, which includes jpgs of both the documents and the infamous drone photos, which, due to their obvious lameness and fakery, quickly called the CARET documents into question by association with them.
To me, though, the CARET documents stand as a perfect example of a ‘pataphysical locus of poetry, hoax, and whistleblowing — as Christian Bök sez in his study of ‘pataphysics: the lapis of alchemy, like the lexis of poetry, reveals that the figural is merely the alembic for the literal. The noble metal of truth arises from the ignoble filth of error.
It may be verboten in the UFO community to suggest that we can still work honestly toward disclosure through artificial means — but, after all, it’s the function of ‘pataphysics, in a way, to reengineer a whole system by undermining its elements — essentially the same drama that poetry enacts on the brain. Perhaps by introducing a poetic contaminant (since good poetry has so long fought against truthfulness) into the disclosure movement, we can inoculate it to misinformation and, in consequence, recognize hoax, and recognize it as metaphor (or pataphor), and an object of aesthetic beauty.
